Ken Reinhard AM (1936–2024) was an early adopter of Pop art in Australia, embracing the movement as it arrived from the United States and United Kingdom during the early 1960s. At a time when computers were beginning to transform ideas of technology, information and communication, Reinhard explored their visual language rather than their productive capabilities, creating artworks that appeared to possess their own behaviours — spinning, illuminating and engaging with movement and perception. His mock mathematical formulas, arrays of geometric constructions, and compositions of cables and tubing play with the aesthetics of the burgeoning computer age, while also examining the relationship between the artist, the model, the machine, and the viewer. Alongside his wife Barbara, Reinhard cultivated a deep appreciation for modern and postmodern design, an influence that remained central to his practice and his fascination with the visual possibilities of new technologies.
